Zverev Faces Auger-Aliassime in ATP Finals Showdown

Introduction

The occupational hazards of round-robin tennis often result in at this point of the season-ending championships fans frequently find themselves confused, scrambling about for a mathematical tool and striving to determine the complex qualification scenarios. But today's game between Zverev and Auger-Aliassime, thankfully, is easy. It's a direct elimination: the winner sets up a semifinal matchup against Carlos Alcaraz at this season-ending event; the defeated player goes home.

Zverev is the favourite for this: the world No 3 is the more accomplished player, has been the champion at this tournament twice before and is ahead in their direct encounters with six victories against three defeats, winning both their previous matches on an enclosed hard court.

Yet … this type of playing field on which Felix has secured the bulk of his trophies, he’s riding a high after his impressive recovery against Shelton on recently and he defeated the German in the US Open early stage in late summer. Plus, the playing speed is higher in Turin than at the US Open venue, which provides an additional advantage in the Canadian's benefit.

If Zverev holds back, as he did against the Italian, and the Canadian presses the German with his effective service game and bold strategy, it might very well be the 25-year-old Canadian – the former prodigy who was once in line ahead of Alcaraz and Sinner to take over from the legendary trio – who obtains the dubious honour of playing against the world No 1 on Saturday.

Play begins: at approximately 8:30 PM in Turin, 7.30pm GMT.
