A uniquely yellow-fronted apartment block visible behind helped us locate the video.

Our team is checking video footage and photographs circulated this morning that depict the scene of a alleged car bomb blast that authorities in Russia say fatally injured a high-ranking military officer in Moscow.

Officials in Russia stated that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was inside the vehicle that detonated and that he succumbed of his wounds. A probe is currently ongoing.

Our starting point to verify the location of where the pictures were from was based on posts indicating the explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern district of the capital city of Russia.

We used panoramic mapping services on Google Maps and the local mapping service Yandex to match the unique yellow colour of a adjacent residential complex seen in the video.

Identifying additional buildings, lamp-posts and the street layout confirmed the exact location the pictures were captured.

Additionally, we verified that the videos were new and that the images had not been digital alteration.
