For much of the concluding season of *Stranger Things*, the young Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield find themselves trapped in a realm of memories built from the recollections of Henry Creel. Their mission for freedom in episode 6 leads them to relive a defining event from Henry's early years—a discovery that potentially carries the secret to his downfall for good.

Heads Up: The following contains major spoilers for the concluding episodes.

The Discovery in the Mine Shaft

After locating Max in the mental landscape known as Camazotz, it becomes clear she is hiding out in a grotto that Henry strangely fears. An accidental discovery a telescope found in Henry's old home lets Holly see that the source of fear lies not within the cave. Matching her view through the cap, she and Max tumble into a deep mine shaft.

In this place, they observe a child version of Henry come across an wounded, fearful individual. Attempting assistance, the man panics and shoots, wounding the boy in the hand. Fighting for his life, Henry ends the threat with a rock. "Did this make Henry evil?" Holly asks tearfully. The answer is affirmative, but the event went deeper than a fight for life.

Like many elements in volume 2, the truth about the encounter is detailed in the stage play Stranger Things: The First Shadow.

An Interdimensional Incident and Stolen Research

This backstory explains the legendary naval test, which reportedly teleported a warship into a dimension known as the Abyss. The ship was attacked, and the lone returnee was the captain, who returned in a catatonic condition with an entirely new blood.

The captain's son, the future Dr. Brenner, wanted to repeat this phenomenon in remote Nevada. But a disloyal lab worker took experimental components to give to the Russian agents, who were eager to begin their parallel research. The man in the mine shaft is the one who stole the materials.

Unlocking the Mystery

Given what is known about Brenner's work, the briefcase almost certainly contained vials of the unique blood type. In the scene, Henry is wounded and bleeding. He likely becomes contaminated upon handling the contents, leading to the awakening of his powers—powers he would genetically impart to the kids Brenner would experiment on.

A second theory, the case could have held dark matter that eventually found its way to the Hawkins lab, where it acts to anchor the parallel world. *The First Shadow* reveals that Henry ended up in the Abyss, reappearing hours later with a new blood type and personality. From then on, he battles the influence of a dark entity, much like how Will was possessed by the shadow monster in season 2.

Confronting Terror

Henry's enduring terror of that cave highlights how profoundly traumatic the event was for him. While he commands the Hive Mind and seeks to merge the Abyss into Hawkins, a part of him still exists. The villain weaponizes terror, and the series is building toward a climactic battle between Vecna and Will, who has deliberately faced his greatest terrors to fortify himself.

This journey has effectively disarmed Vecna. More importantly, Will now knows what Vecna himself fears, and this may grant a critical advantage in the endgame conflict ahead.
