Miami Heat and Portland Trail Blazers Claim First Wins After Player Arrests

NBA game action

The Miami Heat scored eighty-six opening half points against the Grizzlies

The Heat claimed a overwhelming 146-114 victory over the Grizzlies in their initial basketball match since guard Terry Rozier was arrested over suspected unlawful sports betting.

Portland Trail Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups was additionally arrested as part of a broad FBI investigation into sports betting. Both men contest the claims.

However, the Miami team were not distracted as they recorded eighty-six opening half scores to lead the Grizzlies by thirty-nine after two quarters, the largest half-time advantage in the team's 37-year history.

Bam Adebayo led the way with 24 points and later said Terry had the support of the team.

"We stand behind him. Full support," Adebayo stated. "We are with him all the way. He's like family at the end of the day."

Miami head coach Spoelstra added: "Terry is somebody who is important to all of us. He's had a beneficial influence on our locker room.

"We send our thoughts and support for him as he goes through this."

Portland also secured their initial match since the arrests, with Brazilian Tiago Splitter taking over as interim coach in Chauncey's absence and guiding the squad to a convincing 139 to 119 win against the Warriors.

"Everyone experienced great experiences with Billups and his coaching style," Tiago said. "Our thoughts are with him and his loved ones but our focus is on the game."

NBA Commissioner Silver 'Disturbed' over Arrests

Addressing the arrests for the first time, league head Adam Silver stated he was "deeply disturbed" by the events of the recent days.

"Nothing is more critical to the league and supporters than the fairness of the competition," he informed Amazon Prime. "Therefore I felt uneasy. It was very upsetting."

Silver also said an NBA investigation into the player's conduct in spring 2023, when there was "aberrational betting" in a match he participated for the Hornets versus the Pelicans, found nothing untoward.

"It was brought to our attention by the regulators and the gambling firms," he added.

"We investigated that situation and were very transparent about it. Although there was that aberrational betting, we, honestly, found no evidence.

"The federal government has legal authority... [it] can impose penalties, can do all kinds of things that the NBA is unable to.

"Therefore, we've been cooperating from that point. And, of course, what they revealed yesterday was an indictment.

"And 30 months after, he still hasn't been convicted of anything, in justice to Terry.

"Obviously, it doesn't look good, but he's been put on administrative leave, and so it is a compromise here between protecting people's rights and conducting an inquiry."
