Stuart Broad has confessed that he remains uncertain about an effective strategy to get out the Australian star and warns that the historic series could become a drawn-out contest if the English team fails to remove Smith quickly.

Smith's Dominant Record

Steve Smith, who is considered among the best batters of this generation, maintains an outstanding average of over 56 in the Ashes series with 12 centuries to his name.

Smith, competing in each England-Australia encounter since the 2010-11 season, was the top scorer during both the 2017-18 and 2019 matches, scoring 687 and 774 runs while Broad was still playing for England.

Facing Smith's Batting

"It's vivid in my memory when he compiled that substantial innings in the 2017 Perth match and I failed to miss the perfect contact for three consecutive days," the bowler revealed on a sports program.

"Whatever I bowled I attempted simply found perfectly with his bat."

"He possesses that unique mentality of the conditions favor me, and I won't be dismissed."

Statistical Superiority

Broad managed to dismiss his opponent 11 instances in Test matches - exceeding by three other bowlers - yet reveals he remains unaware of a reliable method.

The batsman's lifetime average of just over 56 increases to nearly 60 when playing at home. Solely the great Ricky Ponting with 41 tons has scored more than 36 hundred-run innings for Australia.

Facing the Batting Genius

Broad stated: "Obviously his method has developed throughout his career, but I still cannot clearly identify 'this is the way to get him out."

"That represents an incredible strength of his. He's tremendously tough to bowl against. Sometimes it seems as if you didn't send a bad delivery and it still races for four runs."

Current Performance and Readiness

His output dipped somewhat between June 2023 and December 2024 when he experienced 23 innings unable to make a ton, but he recovered with double tons against the Indian team recently and made 131 and 141 runs against the Sri Lankan team at the start of this year.

After an eight-week rest, he began his training for the upcoming series in October's final weeks and promptly made a 118-run innings in his comeback match.

Winning Approach

"To emerge triumphant, we need to restrict his scoring to under 50, isn't that true?" the bowler asked.

"He will score a century, that's what he does."

"Should he maintain 40 runs, that would be no less than 15 below his career average, so you're doing brilliantly. I think you have to get him early in his innings."

"If England fail to achieve getting him out within the initial 40 runs, it will become a long series."

Changing Strategies

England has experimented with multiple strategies to address Smith's unusual style during a decade and a half of Ashes competition.

Broad revealed creating a fresh away-swinger specifically for Smith before last year's contest, while England has targeted Smith's leg-side, delivered outside from the off-side and even attempted the close-in leg-side field during that year's matches - matches in which the batsman started with back-to-back hundreds at that venue.

Memorable Moments

"I recall when the English fielder was positioned at leg gully, and he repeatedly dove in both directions for the first 30 deliveries, narrowly missing multiple times," the bowler remembered.

"The batsman survived, got double tons in that match, remarkable performances."

Broad added: "I recall sitting in a bowlers' meeting about Steve Smith in that season and the coaches proposed perhaps we should attempt targeting his wickets early'}."

"Interesting suggestion, let's verify the frequency with which his stumps have been hit in Australian conditions during the previous five seasons?' A single instance."

Fast Bowling Option

The next encounter, beginning in the Western Australian city (02:30 GMT), will probably involve Smith facing Jofra Archer for the first test matchup since that year, when he was famously troubled and hit by a short ball during the England paceman's fierce spell at that famous venue.

Smith regularly mentions that the bowler didn't get him in that game - he was forced to leave and was eventually out by Woakes' delivery upon his return - though the bowler succeeded to have him caught on a horizontal bat in a limited-overs match during the previous season.

"Can Jofra Archer offer the key?" the bowler questioned. "Getting him to edge from back of a length, going after the ball."

"Since Archer has that trajectory of nipping back towards the wickets, could he produce an outgoing delivery? Smith looks for the delivery coming in."
