Harvard ex-president Summers Leaves from AI Company's Directors

Leadership Change
The former official stated he would withdraw from public positions after Congressional panel released his repeated messages with Jeffrey Epstein

One-time economic leader Larry Summers is leaving the directorate at the artificial intelligence firm, just several days after a series of electronic messages between him and late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein became public.

The economist remarked in a statement that he was "thankful for the privilege to have served, enthusiastic about the promise of the enterprise, and anticipate following their development".

Summers, who once led Harvard University, announced on recently that he would be withdrawing from public commitments due to his association with Jeffrey Epstein.

Message Exchange

The freshly disclosed messages demonstrated that the economist exchanged messages with Jeffrey Epstein until the 24 hours preceding Epstein's 2019 detention for suspected trafficking of underage individuals.

In another announcement, the artificial intelligence company said it accepted Summers' choice to depart.

"We value his significant contributions and the viewpoint he brought to the governing body," the organization stated.

Congressional Action

This development comes after both chambers of Congress agreed on this week to pass a measure that would require the US justice department to make public its files on Jeffrey Epstein.

The bill will then proceed to the desk of US President Donald Trump for signature. Trump has said he intends to approve the bill, after reversing his stance on the subject following pressure from his followers.

Message Details

A group of Epstein-connected correspondence released by the legislative panel last week mentioned numerous prominent individuals in the financier's past associates, without indicating any illegal behavior by those figures.

The emails showed that the professor and the financier regularly had dinners together, with he often attempting to connect the academic to influential world leaders.

Individual Statement

After the emails were shared with the wider community, he stated he took "complete accountability for my misguided choice to continue communicating with Jeffrey Epstein".

He further stated that he hoped "to restore trust and repair bonds with the persons nearest to me".

Career Background

The economist served in leadership roles under party leaders; functioning as treasury secretary under Bill Clinton, and as director of the economic advisory body under President Obama.

He led Harvard from five years and remains a academic there. When announcing his step-down from public commitments previously on this week, he indicated he would continue his teaching commitments.

Other Impacts

Following the economist's declaration on Monday, the Center for American Progress, a left-leaning policy institute in the capital where Summers was a prominent member, announced that he was no longer associated with the organization.

Summers entered the board of the technology firm, which makes the language model, in last year - following a failed attempt to oust its CEO Sam Altman.
