Felicity Cloake's One-Hour Party Plan: Effortless Entertaining for Spontaneous Guests
During the busy season, when there's a lot going on which even energetic individuals might sometimes long for the calm break of January, it is very simple to neglect details. I expect I cannot be the only one who has ever felt jolted back to reality at my desk by an inquiry by someone wondering, "What time are we expected us later?" Fear not; whether you are forgetful, and just likely to make last-minute gatherings, I have your back.
The Secret to Great Gatherings
First and foremost, though I cannot stress this enough, whether you have been planning for months or only 15 minutes, the best events are the easiest. What anyone expects is pleasant conversation, a drink to enjoy, and enough nibbles so guests do not end up gnawing something on the bus back. Unless you're a fictional millionaire, nobody anticipates a full bar, gourmet catering and musical performances.
The best parties are the most basic. However, a concept is useful to disguise the fact you've only thrown this thing together while coming after a long day.
Choosing a Concept to Guide Your Party Planning
That said, an overarching idea works well to hide that you've just thrown the party on while returning from the office. And with a theme, think of for example a seasonal celebration. Going slightly more specific (Swedish-style festivities, for instance, featuring mulled wine, aromatic cocktail, fish snacks and crispbreads, Nordic beats selection; or Latin American celebration, including holiday punch, refreshing lagers or margaritas, along with plenty of tortilla chips, salsa & green spread, with festive music in the background) will focus the selection on the inevitable grocery run.
Strategic Purchasing for Your Event
While shopping, pick one or two beverages (one alcoholic for drinkers, a non-alcoholic one for some avoid alcohol) and some snacks that match the theme, then purchase a generous amount as possible, rather than worrying about giving people endless options. No thing looks more welcoming and cheerful than a bounty – I would consistently prefer to arrive by a tub stocked with cold bottles with affordable bubbly over a single glass with swanky champagne. (Chuck in some bags for chilling, too; there is seldom plenty of ice.)
Cocktails & Punch Streamlined
Should you impress and provide a mixed drink, then pre-mix a large batch in a jug so that you aren't left faffing around with it while you should be socializing. Once underway, enlist a close friend or helper to keep an eye on it then top up when needed until it's finished. Do the same with the alcohol-free option; people love to be given a job at a party allowing them to experience some of positive vibes.
Regarding punch, whatever recipe you choose (they abound on the internet), steer clear of any recipe overly sugary – any kids there need separate beverages – and if you own one, put flavor enhancers nearby (refrain from putting any to the bowl since they're not suitable for people abstaining from drinks entirely). Put in some work with presentation so the non-alcoholic option doesn't seem neglected; just spend a short time to slice some slices of citrus into the bowl.
Nibbles That Work With Minimal Fuss
In my view, I would avoid the readymade assortments of "party foods" available in shops at this time of year; they seem overly complicated, and often involve turning the oven on (should you do this, know that everyone truly likes herb bread or cocktail sausages anyway). It's my firm opinion it's hard to top two really big bowls of decent chips (salted pleases everyone), plus, assuming no allergies, a package of big and excellent value packets of mixed nuts available in the South Asian section in stores, along with a few olives without stones for colour (try not to discover stones in odd places in the future).
In case, as my mother says, you don't consider snacks proper food, a single large piece of quality cheese on a platter and crispbreads and some elegantly arranged fruit always looks painterly. A platter featuring salted or prepared meats or fish arranged there (a single variety, unless you're wealthy), alternatively a handsome pre-made tart, similar to available on deli counters seasonally, is even more filling, while you truly won't fail with artisanal pieces of flatbread, because there's no need for buttering.
