The US Justice Department have officially joined a legal challenge brought forward by California Republicans, aiming to halt the state's recently passed congressional redistricting map.
This court case, filed in federal court, challenges the map supported by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was created in reaction against a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"California's redistricting scheme constitutes a blatant attempt to seize control that tramples on voting rights and undermines the democratic process," stated the nation's top law enforcement official.
The Democratic party have expressed confidence that the new maps will survive legal scrutiny.
"These opponents lost at the ballot box and soon they will face defeat in the judicial system," commented a representative for the governor.
Constitutional Challenge
The legal challenge claims that California's map wrongfully utilized racial considerations to heavily favor Hispanic voters in contravention of the federal constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a proxy to advance political interests, but that is precisely what the California General Assembly did with the redistricting measure," stated a high-ranking representative from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
The legal battle represents the most significant counterpunch by Democrats in the ongoing political battle that started with Texas and has extended to multiple states.
Unlike other states, where Republican state legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan required public consent, which it received with nearly 65% of the vote.
National Implications
The Democratic party need to gain just a small number of Republican-held House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's midterm election.
The party that holds the majority will influence the final years of the sitting president's term, deciding if a GOP-controlled legislature will continue to deliver its agenda or face resistance, investigations and potential further challenges.
