A tragic railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the speed and handling of the country's flagship public works projects.
The accident took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to meticulously determine the reasons behind this tragedy,” affirmed the country's president.
The official reported that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The leader added plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose time in office ended the year before. This venture was closely associated with his government's strategic vision for the southern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The building of both railway systems was overseen by the army, marking a dramatic growth of its role in civilian projects. They were built at an rapid speed, surpassing expectations to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously sparked significant apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an previous accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Appeals for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a primary political opposition called for an urgent suspension in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This stoppage was requested pending a full safety audit. The party stated that the tragedy "demands prompt explanations."
In reaction, the national leader insisted that the train had been functioning in complete adherence to all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these vital undertakings.
