Adult Swim's Top Fresh Series of This Year Secures a Substantial Renewal for Two More Seasons.

Last October, Adult Swim debuted a new season of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, shortly thereafter, the channel unveiled a fresh animated series with a markedly softer tone. Haha, You Clowns was gentle and comforting, in the spirit of a animated take of a serene talk show. At a time often defined by dark humor, this show's sincerity struck a chord and helped it become a surprise hit.

A Two-Season Greenlight

On December 18th, Adult Swim made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for two additional seasons. This provides creator Joe Cappa a massive runway to further explore the world of the Campbell family. The series focuses on three respectful teenage brothers whose central trait is their profound affection for their single father, with Cappa portraying for all four central characters.

"I’m so grateful to the fans of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and helped it grow," stated Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for a little longer."

Network Praise

Accompanying the news laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and oddly captivating." He thanked the fans who discovered the show and championed its peculiarly charming sensibility.

"All of you got behind this new show, rooted for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Comforting Counterpoint

Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a comforting antidote" to more cynical adult animated fare. It offers something surprisingly comfy about watching this lovable family go about their simple existence.

At the time, creator Joe Cappa expressed his desire to help comedy break out of its prevailing layer of irony. He linked this trend to various cultural shifts.

“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we are trapped in,” said Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we just have to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”

What Comes Next

Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa may well be part of that comedic shift. If nothing else, the renewal promises audiences additional episodes to enjoy the gentle humor of the endearing Campbell clan.

The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. The complete first season is currently streaming on HBO Max.
