A high-ranking Russian military figure has been killed following an detonation in Moscow, according to reports from authorities.

The incident occurred on Monday morning when an IED planted beneath a vehicle detonated, causing the death of Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov.

Sarvarov was the head of the armed forces' unit responsible for operational readiness.

The committee mentioned that one possible explanation points to the possible involvement of Ukrainian intelligence services. At this time, Ukraine has remained silent.

Location of the Attack

Teams have been sent to the location, which is understood to be in a south district of the capital.

Media coverage indicate the explosion happened in a car park near a residential building.

History of Assaults

Since the onset of the full-scale conflict in Ukraine, a series of Russian military personnel have been targeted within Moscow.

This new event comes after other notable incidents, such as:

  • General Yaroslav Moskalik was lost his life in a automobile blast in Moscow earlier this year.
  • General Igor Kirillov perished in late 2024 when a bomb concealed on a scooter was triggered from afar.

While a source from Ukraine in the past linked Kirillov's death to Ukraine's security service, such claims are rarely formally acknowledged as a matter of policy.

The war has witnessed clandestine operations moving into the center of the Russian capital.

The investigation into General Sarvarov's death remains underway.
